Tom Detore, 56, is a member of the 100 Marathon Club and will run his 158th marathon at the second-annual Eisenhower Marathon this Saturday in Abilene. The Eisenhower will be Detore's 67th straight month with at least one marathon.

Detore is from Unadilla, NE, and will wear No. 74 in Abilene. He is also a member of the Marathon Maniac Club and will drive to Fayetteville, Arkansas, following Saturday's race to participate in the Hogeye Marathon Sunday.

"I love the feeling of being in the groove," Detore said. "I look forward to my training runs, especially the 20-mile+ ones. I run 65-75 miles each week, and I wish I could run more. I run a lot of doubles (two marathons in a weekend), when my job allows it."

Detore has previously run in as many as six marathons in six days.

"I actually won the fourth and fifth," Detore said. "They all had less than 15 runners (the Marathon Six-Pack in Ohio), and my latter three were faster than my first three."

Detore began running in 1986 and has run in Los Angeles, Chicago and Houston, among other larger marathons.

"I don't do well in the mega marathons, so I usually avoid them," Detore said. "I like marathons with less than 1,000 runners the best."

Detore says that between miles 18-22 is a difficult time in the race for him.

"I start slowing down around 18 and get a second wind after 21. For some reason the 21st mile seems to be my slowest. I normally start passing other runners after mile 21," Detore said.

Detore advises new marathoners to run for fun and not worry about time estimates, just finish.

"Walk through the water stops, but walk fast," Detore said. "It will help you regain your pace. The more fast walking you do the less of a cripple you will be the next day. If you run your first too fast, there probably will not be a second one."

Detore ran for more than eight years before entering his first marathon in Los Angeles. He said his biggest problem was learning to run with shoes on, having run eight years on the crest of the beach in Long Beach, CA.

"I just recently qualified for the Boston at the Blue Angel Marathon after 18 years of running marathons. It was my 124th and I needed at least a 3:45:59. I ran it in 3:40.21. It was my second best time and less than two minutes from a personal record," Detore said.

Detore ran four marathons in two weeks with 3:38, 3:43, 3:50 and 3:58 for his running times.

"I will probably never top that," Detore said. "The 3:38 is still my PR and the 3:43 my third fastest marathon."

Detore's personal goals include wanting to run a sub 4:00 marathon in each state. He currently has a sub 4:00 in 24 states.

"I want to finish my second and third time around of completing a marathon in all 50 states," Detore said. He currently has run 31 states the second time and 19 the third time (running the Virginia Creeper before the Eisenhower will make it 20).

Detore's long term goal is to run a marathon at 100 years old and not come in last.

"I would also like to run someday 1,000 marathons and 100 ultras" Detore said. Detore has run 31 ultras, which are races that are more than 26.2 miles distance. Detore ran a 24-hour run in Arizona, running 107 miles and coming in sixth out of 43 runners.

Detore will join runners from 24 states at the Eisenhower Marathon this Saturday with races beginning at 7 a.m.
