Katter Feature
Eisenhower Marathon
Running in his 87th marathon while in Abilene, Bruce Katter plans
to finish the Eisenhower Marathon in 3 hours and 40 minutes on March
27.
"Kansas will be the 43rd state I've run in since I started
running after my 55th birthday," said Katter who is currently
69. "I started running while trying to get through a difficult
divorce."
Katter runs 20-23 miles weekly and has participated in marathons
in Chicago, New York, Houston, Portland, Vancouver, New Orleans
and Los Angeles, as well as the Boston.
"It is hard to pick one best marathon experience," Katter
said. "Portland does an excellent job of putting on a marathon,
Mardi Gras was fun, and the Navajos do a fine job with their Shiprock
Marathon."
Katter runs four miles in the morning on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
and Friday mornings, does a 20-minute weights workout on Tuesday
and works in an endurance run of 15 miles on Sunday.
"As I get enthusiastic and approach my 70th birthday, I am
adding a track workout while assisting my 85-year-old father through
his weekly workout."
Katter's goals include running in all 50 states and running his
100th marathon by the end of the year.
"I want to finish the 50 states early enough to get some speed
back for the National Masters Championships in Minneapolis-St. Paul
in October," Katter said. "I might also do the National
Outdoor Track Championship. In 2006 I plan to pick up a couple more
continents toward the goal of having run on all seven continents;
so far I have run in North America and Antarctica."
Katter's advice to beginning runners is not to get caught up in
the early enthusiasm.
"It is much better to get an adrenaline rush in the last few
miles, because you have something left and can pass a few people,"
Katter said. "Otherwise you go out with the crowd and then
drag yourself to the finish."
Katter said his wish for the Eisenhower Marathon would be to have
a 40-50 degree day.
Marathon, half marathon and team relay races begin at the Eisenhower
Marathon at 7 a.m. Children's races will be offered at 10:30 a.m.
