Paul Hargrave Feature
Eisenhower Marathon
Traveling from Gainesville, Florida, sixty-five year old Paul Hargrave
will be be running his 65th marathon in Abilene March 27 at the
Eisenhower Marathon.
Hargrave began running marathons in New York in 1990 and has run
in Chicago and Boston, among other places.
"I get great enjoyment from running, and I've found that the
marathon experience is particularly enjoyable," Hargrave said.
"Running is an integral part of my lifestyle, which also includes
biking, kayaking, hiking and cross-country skiing. If I keep in
good enough shape to run a marathon, I'm in condition to do the
other activities that I enjoy."
Hargrave trains by running 6-8 miles three days weekly and completes
a 10 or more mile run each weekend. He also does aerobic exercises
and uses weight machines. He tries to run a marathon or other race
monthly.
"The hardest part for me has been the last few miles of a
marathon in which I've run too fast in the early miles," Hargrave
said. "I've learned by painful experience to run the first
six miles slowly-more slowly than I could run, and at a pace less
than the pace that I might be able to average for the marathon.
After the half-marathon point, I begin to increase the pace and
continue to run as fast as I comfortably can. I generally run the
second half faster than the first, passing many runners along the
way."
Hargrave advises new marathon runners to have a good time while
running, talk with runners around you, be patient and run easily.
Hargrave's favorite marathon experience was running the London
Marathon in 2000.
"It was a festive atmosphere with hot air balloons, runners
in costumes, and a course that took us past London Bridge and Big
Ben," Hargrave said. "The runners and the crowds were
wonderful. Time went by so quickly that it seemed to be over too
quickly."
Hargrave's goal include completing a marathon in all 50 states.
Kansas will be his 44th state.
"Then I want to complete 100 marathons, and I want to travel
to interesting places to run marathons, such as Iceland or Australia."
The Eisenhower Marathon, half marathon and team relay will begin
at the Eisenhower Center at 7 a.m. Children's races will be offered
at 10:30. Further information about the marathon can be obtained
by calling the Dickinson County Red Cross at 263-2341 or visiting
