Dear marathon volunteers and business supporters

My apologies for being so slow in mailing this marathon thank you. It takes weeks after the marathon to restore the office to normal, send out race results to the national websites, including Boston, and, of course, help with crisis situations that arise in the county. Our United Way application needed finishing by April 1, a national audit report needed mailing by April 12, and a new office manager was trained this month. We have been BUSY!

However, thanking you properly for your fantastic support of our second-annual Eisenhower Marathon is of prime importance, and I certainly don't want to neglect doing so. I hope you all were able to read the Letter to the Editor in the April 17th Reflector Chronicle and April 15th Chapman News-Times. I certainly hope I didn't forget any persons or part of the support given the event, as each of you is vitally important to the success of our marathon. If I could have the space to list all your names in the newspaper, it would be an impressive list indeed.

During the last three weeks, runners have sent many thank you notes to me praising the event organization and the volunteer effort. Several of those have been in the Reflector, also. They have raved about the volunteer effort saying, "They were the BEST! Thanks to everyone involved! I can't believe they stayed out in that weather to support us! I will never forget their kindness and support!" Runners were so appreciative of your help with the event! Each one of the 457 volunteers played an important part in handling your assignment well, and I thank you most sincerely!

Eisenhower Center staff, Kansas Department of Transportation, Kansas Highway Patrol, Dickinson County Commissioners and staff, Sheriff's Department, City of Abilene Commissioners and city workers, Brown Memorial Foundation, Abilene Parks and Recreation, Abilene Area Chamber and Ambassadors, Convention and Visitors Bureau, you are the cement that holds this event together and makes it work effectively. Your efforts, through this event, to help families in need are heartfelt and DEEPLY APPRECIATED!

Corporate sponsors and business donors, you carry our vision forward. By supporting the marathon and other endeavors last year, you enabled Red Cross to assist more than 10,000 people in our area. TREMENDOUS! We would fail to operate without your help!

The small children who were out in the blizzard in January with no warm clothes (following a wreck on I-70) thank you all for the sweats outfits and coats we provided. The young couple from Turkey who needed assistance following a car wreck on I-70 thank you for the motel room and food and items for their baby. The hundreds of elderly in Dickinson County who face rising utility costs and simply can't survive on reduced income thank you for keeping their homes warm. The folks facing health problems and various medical costs, which aren't covered by insurance, thank you for helping them while they are going through a very tough period in life. The soldiers in Iraq who need emergency family messages verified and sent by Red Cross thank you for helping them while they are serving our country. Fire clients thank you for helping restore their homes after disasters hit. I thank you from the bottom of my heart because I work with these folks daily, I see the desperation in their eyes, and I get the warm hugs of appreciation for the assistance we can give because you cared enough to help us.
You are all WONDERFUL to care about helping us help others!

With sincere appreciation,
June DeWeese, Director
